This voice note was a highlight of my year
A former colleague had me thinking: Would you work for you?
The year is winding down and you’re probably trying to relax, so this last newsletter of 2023 will be short and sweet.
So much happened for me this year, but if there’s one moment I’m really proud of, it was when I received an impromptu voice note back in April, from a former executive assistant.
In the voice note, she thanked me for being a great boss and shared her appreciation for always taking the time to teach her or show her how to do things better.
That meant a lot to me. It provided a little validation for my leadership skills, but really, how often do people bother to share words of appreciation for others, much less to a former boss?
I remember working at companies or for clients where people were spoken at rudely like lowly order takers, didn’t get paid a last paycheck, were unceremoniously laid off with barely any severance or notice, or just generally treated like sh*t. This usually looked like managers with no respect for others’ time in the form of last-minute canceled meetings, bad communication, requiring people to infer things, and fostering a confrontational work culture.
As a company founder/CEO, I vowed never to treat people that way.

Instead, I wanted people to feel like they had autonomy and freedom to do great work and make great decisions.
Running a company and managing a team was hard. But I also made it easier on myself by coaching and teaching people how things can be done more easily or better, than leaving them to the wolves.
Technology also helps; I made short and clear explainer videos (I used a tool called Loom) to teach recurring processes, to ensure I didn’t have to repeat showing.
The larger mission is making sure that no matter what I do, to be a leader I’d want to work for.
To check myself regularly by asking, “Would you want to work for you?”
This even goes beyond a professional realm: Would you want to be your own partner/sister/daughter/mother, and so on?

Until next time,
